As most of you on this site are probably fed up of hearing by now, there is an app for everything. From games to productivity management and photography to social networking, the range of app types is truly outstanding and the choice each of us has within each category is equally outstanding, we are truly spoilt when it comes to this amazing world of apps.

Learning is something that apps can help with a lot, whether you want to learn a new language, or maybe you just want a few interesting space facts to keep that brain ticking, either way an app can help you do so. With the topic of learning in mind, we’re going to have a look at 5 skills that you can gain, or improve, with the help of some fantastic apps.

Get Yo’ Math On
To quote Jack Black ’Math is a wonderful thing…’, it’s amazing how much you can do with math and exactly how useful it can be. However once we get past school, we more often than not, forget about learning the likes of math all together. There are many math apps that can get you back on the math train with ease.

MathRef is one of those apps, while it doesn’t teach you math directly, it is a wonderfully made math formula reference app. For just $0.99 it provides direct access to all the mathematical formulas you could possibly need including formulas used in algebra, geometry, trigonometry, etc.

If sitting and looking at a list of formulas isn’t exactly your thing, then we may have something a little more creative for you. A fantastic way to improve upon your math skills is through learning the true skill of poker… with odd calculation and hand ranking everywhere, poker can improve both your math speed and accuracy. As far as poker learning apps go, there is a great list over on pokerstation.co.uk that will provide you with all the poker apps you need.

If you want a bit more of a direct approach to learning, then the Khan Academy app may be perfect for you. The app, which is free, provides a massive selection of educational videos and virtual lectures on a range of topics, one of which is maths.

Languages
Apps can be a huge help when it comes to learning a new language, or even translating on the fly if you happen to be in a foreign country. There is again a massive array of apps to choose from, but one of the very best out there is a little app called DuoLingo.

DuoLingo is a highly appraised language education app that is free! It’s no regular way to learn either, it’s incredibly fun and has gaming elements to it as you can practice against the clock and level up as you learn. The range of languages DuoLingo offers at the moment isn’t massive, but it includes Spanish, English, French, German, Portuguese and Italian, which is definitely a good start.

Astronomy
If you’re not too keen on learning more math or conquering a new language, then maybe something a bit more relaxing may be right up your street. If you love the stars and planets then you should give astronomy a shot.

Smartphones are the perfect device for a bit of amateur astronomy as they are mobile, have GPS and in some cases also have a built in gyroscope. There are a lot of apps available with similar features, but one that I’ve personally found to be great is ‘Star Walk’ for iOS. It costs £1.99 and it allows you to see real-time, all the stars, planets and constellations on your screen… as you pan your phone across the sky, the gyroscope will go to work and you will be able to see whatever you point it at.
