iOS 7 is finally here, and has a completely new look, features, reworked interfaces of core apps and plenty to show off. In this step-by-step we’ll be showing you how to update to this beauty on your iPod Touch 5th generation.

Check your iPod

First of all, be sure you have an eligible iOS 7 iPod Touch. Unfortunately, Apple’s new OS is available exclusively for the iPod Touch 5th generation if we look in the iPod compatibility list. I personally don’t see any reason why Apple had to exclude iPod 4th generation other than marketing. If you have an iPod Touch 5th gen, let’s proceed to the next step.

Update your iTunes

It is highly recommendable to update your iTunes to the latest version available (11.1), which is iOS 7 ready. If you’re going to update using iTunes, updating it to the latest version is a smart choice. The update process will go flawlessly and you’re far away from getting an error.

Backup

We suggest that you perform a backup of your iPod Touch before updating. Normally, an iOS update doesn’t corrupt your data, but a backup prevents you from losing data in case something goes wrong. You can either backup using iTunes or iCloud.

To backup through iTunes, connect your iPod Touch to the computer and wait for iTunes to pop-up. Select your device and scroll down in the summary page to Backups compartment and click on Back Up Now.

You can backup directly from your iPod Touch as well. Make sure you have logged in to iCloud and then just go to Settings > iCloud > Storage & Backup and switch iCloud Backup to On.

Update over-the-air:

Updating using OTA (over-the-air) is in fact very simple and quite safe. Just go to Settings > General > Software Update on your iPod Touch an tap on Download and Install.

Update via iTunes

  1. When you’re ready to update, launch iTunes on your Mac or PC.
  2. Plug in your iPod Touch.
  3. Once your iPod Touch is successfully recognized by iTunes, click on the Summary tab.
  4. Down below iPod Touch section, click on Check for Update.
  5. iTunes will now say that a new iPod Touch software iOS 7.0 is out and will ask you to download it and update. Click on Download and Install and be patient. iTunes will now download a ~1GB file and then will update your iPod Touch.

Unlike other devices, iPod Touch 5th generation has no restrictions in features and possibilities.  After the update process is done, your device will restart and show you the Quick Setup greeting. You’re now ready to enjoy iOS 7!
