iOS 8 Device Compatibility

The iPhone 4 will be left behind by iOS 8 whereas the iPhone 5 will make the jump.

In Apple’s WWDC 2014 affair, the Cupertino group made known the newest edition of its mobile operating system, iOS 8. Incorporated in the attribute list for the OS – accessible later on this fall – is an improved OS X addition, new prognostic-text keyboard, support for third-party widgets and keyboards, interactive alerts, among other improvements.

Holders of iOS gadgets will be set to fill up the servers with their efforts to download iOS 8 the moment it is live.

Here are the gadgets that will receive iOS 8:

  • iPhone 4S
  • iPhone 5
  • iPhone 5C
  • iPhone 5S
  • iPod Touch (fifth generation)
  • iPad (second generation)
  • iPad with Retina display (third generation)
  • iPad Air
  • iPad Mini (first generation)
  • iPad Mini with Retina display (second generation)

That is each iPad release since the second generation, made public back in March of 2011. The iPhone 4S dates back to October of 2011, whereas the single edition of the iPod Touch that will make the jump to iOS 8 is the most current generation, made public September 2012.

This does leave a handful of gadgets that will not get to experience the most current iOS release.

These gadgets that will NOT receive iOS 8:

  • iPhone 4 and older
  • iPod Touch (fourth generation) and older
  • iPad (first generation)

Of those gadgets, just the iPhone 4 got to use iOS 7. The iPhone 3GS was left behind in iOS 6, the iPhone 3G stopped at iOS 4, and the initial iPhone made it to iOS 3. The first generation of iPad lost support at iOS 5. For the iPod Touch, the fourth generation got to iOS 6, the third generations stopped at iOS 3, and the second and first generation never made it beyond the days of “iPhone OS.”

Still, Apple is taking the bulk of its gadgets along for the trip with iOS 8. Just one gadget that supports iOS 7 – the iPhone 4 – is leaving the bandwagon. People who have been clinging to older gadgets can begin saving up at this time to seize one of those iOS 8 compatible gadgets ahead of the operating system being released in the fall of 2014.
