windows 8Microsoft happens to be the most important company when it comes to operating systems. The OS landscape across the globe has been dominated by the software giant from a long time. Microsoft has always managed to improve upon its previous launches with almost every operating system release it has made. Microsoft definitely knows how to be successful in the market by understanding the operating system space.

In the long and storied history of Microsoft the most important launch made by it is certainly that of Microsoft Windows 7. People were literally rebelling against Microsoft when Windows Vista was launched. In order to revert computers back to Windows XP, vendors had to allow ‘downgrade rights’. Unlike Microsoft’s expectations Windows Vista was not liked as much. Windows Vista was obviously bad all around that the enterprise eventually just ignored the OS. Luckily all that got fixed with the launch of Windows 7 which is what Microsoft had expected Vista should have been. There is no doubt that consumers are quite satisfied and content with the OS since it has been confirmed by Microsoft as the fast selling Windows version.

Thus, Windows 7 is now a thing of the present and as we look at the future we need to prepare for the launch of Windows 8, Microsoft’s upcoming OS. Not much is known yet but it can be expected that the OS will be better than Windows 7.

An Improved OS

Unlike previous Window versions which were updates, Windows 8 is expected to be an improvement upon Windows 7. Windows 7 is already very successful and there is nothing within it that needs to be updated thus it can also be expected that there will be a huge similarity between Windows 8 and Windows 7.

Improved Security

Microsoft seems to focus a lot on improving security with every OS release they make. Windows XP was already quite secure when Service Pack 2 was released. Currently the most secure OS available from Microsoft is undoubtedly Windows 7 and so we can expect that the security features in Windows 8 will turned up another notch.

ARM Compatibility

Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer, during the Consumer Electronics Show earlier in 2011, stated that ARM based devices would be supported by the next Windows version. He stated that this was of extreme importance for companies using ARM chips to sell products since they could now make use of Windows.

Application Store

With the release of Windows 8 it is being speculated that an application store might also be released by Microsoft. If this happens then the upcoming OS could be potential competition for Mac Operating Systems such as the Mac OS X Snow Leopard and the upcoming ‘Lion’. The inclusion of applications marketplaces is already a feature that is expected to be introduced in future desktop OS.

Better booting up

Windows 8 is going to have a better booting up of system, where the sleep and hibernate would have a different meaning. The booting up would be faster when getting back from a hibernation mode, where the front apps would keep running and the core operating system files would be in sleep mode. Windows 7 booting up after a sleep or hibernate mode would be comparatively slower.

Most probably we will have to wait until next year for the release of Windows 8 by Microsoft and as mentioned the OS can be expected to be a much better version of Windows 7.
