Finally after multiple delays, the Indians will now soon be able to change their network operators, retaining the same SIM card and the same phone number which they used earlier. It’s the mobile phone number portability option, through which one can change their network operator and this would soon start with Haryana circle, from Nov 1st, 2010.
There are 22 circles in India that would slowly get the facility, but as of now it would be started with the Haryana circle on Nov 1st. Lack of infrastructure, and subscribers not being prepared for the service, were the reasons why the portability was not implemented yet in India. There are 2 zones the country is divided into, and they would have 11 circles each.
Zone 1, which covers the northern and western regions, has been given to Syniverse Technologies, while Zone 2 that includes the south and east regions has been awarded to MNP Interconnection Telecom Solutions.
