If you got Samsung’s latest flagship device Galaxy S4 and want to enjoy custom ROMs and all the available hacks and modifications – flashing a custom recovery is essential. One of the best custom recovery systems out there are TWRP Recovery (Test Work Recovery Project) and CWM Recovery (ClockworkMod). Today we’re going to show you how to flash on your desired custom recovery.

Note! This guide is only for the GT-I9500 and GT-I9505 versions of Galaxy S4. Applying the below steps to another version will probably brick your device.

Prerequisites

  1. Your Galaxy S4 must have an unlocked bootloader. If it’s not, check out our previous tutorial on how to unlock the Galaxy S4 bootloader.
  2. Fully back-up your phone because going through this process will wipe all your data.
  3. Make sure you have at least 60% left on your battery.
  4. Important! Download the custom recovery you want to install on your Galaxy S4. As we mentioned earlier, you can choose between TWRP Recovery and CWM Recovery. Before that, check whether your Galaxy is a I9500 or I9505 by going to Settings -> More -> About Device -> Model Number. TWRP I9500  TWRP I9505  CWM I9500  CWM I9505.
  5. Enable USB debugging on your phone. To do that, go to Settings > Applications > Development > USB debugging.
  6. Download Odin 3.07 and extract it to a convenient folder.
  7. Download and install the USB drivers for Samsung devices.

Flashing a custom recovery

  1. Once you’ve done all Prerequisite steps, turn off your phone and disconnect if from your computer.
  2. Put your device in Download Mode by holding down the Volume Down + Home + Power buttons until the screen shows a warning screen. Press the Volume Up button to enter the Download Mode.
  3. Launch Odin 3.07 and then connect your Galaxy S4 to the computer.
  4. Wait until Odin detects your phone and the ID:COM box turns yellow (or blue).
  5. Press the PDA button and pick your desired custom recovery you chose and have downloaded earlier.
  6. Ensure that the ONLY boxes checked are Auto Reboot and F.Reset Time.
  7. Press on Start and wait till the installation process is finished.

When it’s done, your device will have a custom recovery. To boot your Samsung Galaxy S4 into CWM or TWRP Recovery Mode follow these steps:

  1. Power off your device.
  2. Hold the Volume Up + Home + Power buttons simultaneously.
  3. Release them when the the custom recovery logo appears.
