The world is packed with incredible technological advances, “moonshots” as they are called by tech gurus. Google and Facebook are two giant social media companies hunting for bright ideas every single day. Each time a new technology initiative or pioneering acquisition is being launched, these two companies cannot wait to buy them off and add them to their list of trophy acquisitions.

Google has always been a fan of new tech innovations. They set up super fast internet connectivity that’s 100 times faster than average broadband providers. Their plan is certainly big, challenging and bold, yet some would agree that Google’s initiatives are mainstream compared to Facebook’s mega acquisitions.

Google’s “moonshot” discoveries

Google’s plans to make homes smarter are linked to the acquisition of Nest Labs, a home automation company purchased for $3.2 billion in January 2014. Co-founded by Matt Rogers and Tony Fadell, two former Apple engineers, Nest allows homeowners to connect their appliances and thermostats via the internet.

Another pioneering Google discovery was the Google Glass, a miniature computer with a heads up display that accept commands by voice and has a pair of glasses attached to it. One of Google’s latest and most groundbreaking inventions was the Google Chauffeur, a self-driving car with city-driving abilities that could be ready for purchase in 2017.

Facebook’s “moonshot” discoveries

Facebook’s latest acquisition is Oculus Rift, a virtual reality device that cost $2 billion. The VR headset is meant for avid gamers who really want to feel like they’re part of a video game. Some other famous companies bought by Facebook over the years:

  • WhatsApp – $19 billion
  • Branch – $15
  • Face.com – $100
  • Instagram – $1 billion

Now that we know how visionary and creative Google and Facebook can be, it’s only natural to assume that future “moonshots” will be even bigger. Let’s see some more ingenious ideas:

1. Magnetic Field Motion Interfaces

Both Google and Facebook are exploring brand new machine to customer interfaces. Google in particular, has spent lots of money on inertial-based and voice motion technology. Space motion sensing via a free magnetic field is a recent form of space motion detection that’s worth certainly exploring.

2. 3D printing technology

Although 3D printing is not a new area, it’s surprising that giants like Facebook and Google have not made any important bets just yet. There are very few enterprises that control this market, so it goes without saying that the industry is on fire. 3D printing is an industry that’s growing fast. Experts are estimating that it will be worth $8 billion by the year 2020. Soon enough, mass produced items will be replicated and edited by machines. Should we expect 3D printers to make smartphones, tablets and video games any time soon? If that’s the case, Google and Facebook should hurry up.

3. Interfaces brain to machine

Out of all previously mentioned “moonshot” ideas, interfaces brain to machine are the most surreal. We all want to be able to interact with machines, however from a rational point of view, that’s just impossible, at least for now. EEG is a type of technology that’s been in use since 1920. The work involved monitors the scalp’s electrical activity, thus triggering ionic currents routing through the brain’s neurons. As dangerous and as outrageous that might sound, interfaces brain to machine is a “moonshot” idea tech companies should keep an eye on.

Five, ten, twenty years from now the “moonshots” we presented above will seem trivial to the average consumer, and that’s because technology is constantly advancing. It’s like time, you can’t stop it and you can’t blench it … it can only move forward.
