Samsung along with China Telecom revealed a mobile phone that is one of it’s kind in the line of Android phones. Stepping aside of the traditional flat or curved simple body design, Samsung finally came out with a flip phone that runs on the Android operating system. It’s the Samsung W899 that was put under display lately, where Samsung partnered with the Chinese network China Telecom. It’s going to be a flagship model for them, and this against the expectations, is not just an entry-level device, but packed with a few pretty good specifications one would be impressed about.
Although this might look like a simple phone, it has the things comparable to any other high-end smartphone, but it won’t come with the coming-soon version of Android i.e. Gingerbread, as Froyo is still what the W899 would be entering the market with. The phone has two touch-screens, one on the front when the flip is closed, and the other on the top of the keypad when the flip opens. Both the screens are touch sensitive and of 3.3-inch screen size. They are the AMOLED screens with excellent graphics and display features, with WVGA support. The touch interface surely looks cool, with the multi-touch capability of the phone.
Talking about the other specifications, the phone has got 2 cameras – The rear camera is of 5-megapixel quality with autofocus, and a backlight support that helps it for the HD video recording, and a front VGA camera which is good enough for video chatting. The memory internally is 512MB and there is a slot for the microSD card. The dimensions of the phone are – 57.4 × 107.5 × 17.55 mm which makes it a thick enough one, but that’s what one can expect from a flip model.
The connectivity options are the same as for any high-end smartphone, i.e. the USB, Bluetooth, WiFi, GPS etc. and the network communication support is through 3G CDMA 2000 EVDO Rev.A; 2G CDMA 1X / GMS (GPRS / EDGE) 900/1800/1900 MHz. This all comes power packed with the 1GHz processor, which can guarantee a great speed to the phone, with Android being a booster dose.
The phone is going to support both the GSM and the CDMA networks, and would be one of those worth trying out, for a change. There has been no good name yet with Android and the Flip model together, so lets wait for the Samsung W899.
