Apple has surpassed Nokia and held off Samsung to reach the top position as a smartphone vendor in the global market, although we see Samsung and Nokia being the big and tough competitors leading in a few countries. In a year, the stats have turned a lot in Apple’s favor where Nokia was at a strong position, but lets check the market share for this year’s 2nd quarter –
Global Smartphone Vendor Shipments in 2011 2nd quarter:
- Apple – 20.3 million
- Samsung – 19.2 million
- Nokia – 16.7 million
- Other – 53.8 million
- The total shipments in the 2nd quarter of 2011 – 110 million
Global Smartphone Vendor Shipments in 2010 2nd quarter:
- Nokia – 23.8 million
- Apple – 8.4 million
- Samsung – 3.1 million
- Other – 27.1 million
- The total shipments in the 2nd quarter of 2010 – 62.4 million
From what the stats say, there is a total decline of Nokia where around 7 million count got reduced, while Samsung and Apple saw a great rise in the number of sales. The count for Samsung would surely go higher if they have a better timing of launching their Android phones in the US.
Alex Spektor, Senior Analyst at Strategy Analytics said –
Global smartphone shipments grew a healthy 76 percent annually to reach a record 110 million units in Q2 2011. We had previously reported on Apple becoming the largest smartphone vendor in terms of revenue and profits. Now, just four years after the release of the original iPhone, Apple has become the world’s largest smartphone vendor by volume with 18 percent market share. Apple’s growth remained strong as it expanded distribution worldwide, particularly in China and Asia.
According to another research, the Android OS sales were double than that of the iOS phones, where around 47 million devices were sold during that quarter. And in the timeline as we see a lot more Android phones being launched, there should be a lot of influence in the number of sales and Samsung’s sales count. Apple tops almost everything as of now, with the iPhone 4 being the best camera on flickr, after the 3G being the best camera smartphone last year.
