Absinthe is 2012’s most awaited jailbreak tool and it has been installed on millions of iOS devices. All credit goes to pod2g and Chronic Dev team that did this very easy app. Absinthe is an untethered jailbreak which means you don’t have to boot your phone via PC. Today we’re going to take you through the step-by-step procedure showing how to jailbreak your iPhone running iOS 5.1.1 on both Mac and Windows.

Note! This tutorial is for iPhone 3Gs, iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S only that run iOS 5.1.1. Devices on other than this firmware are NOT supported. Follow the following steps very carefully in order not to brick your phone.

Prerequisites

  1. Better backup your iPhone in case of any occurring error during this procedure.
  2. For iPhone 3Gs and iPhone 4 owners: In case you have an Ultrasn0w-unlocked phone and want to update to 5.1.1, use Redsn0w instead. It allows you to update while preserving the modem baseband.
  3. It is absolutely essential to disable password protection on your iPhone by going to Settings > General > Passcode Lock On. Absinthe will not work otherwise.

Jailbreak using Absinthe

  1. Download and extract Absinthe v2.0.4. (Mac | Windows)
  2. Launch Absinthe exe file as an Administrator.
  3. After is open, connect your iPhone to computer via USB cable.
  4. Absinthe should now detect your phone and check the iOS version on it. If it’s alright, the Jailbreak button will become available.
  5. Click on Jailbreak and let the process begin.

Troubleshooting

If you encounter problems jailbreaking using Absinthe then please follow these steps:

  1. Launch iTunes and go to the Summary page of your iPhone. Click on Back Up and wait till iTunes creates a backup for your phone.
  2. Once iTunes is done go back to your iPhone and drop all content and settings by going to Settings > General > Reset > Erase all Content and Settings.
  3. Follow the jailbreaking steps again.
  4. Once successfully jailbroken, go back to iTunes and restore from the backup you’ve created earlier. All your settings and content will appear back as they was before.

However, if this workaround doesn’t work either, please Restore your iPhone from scratch. A clean system is always a better environment for Absinthe to install on.
